Insurance Agent vs. Broker: What's the Difference?

The titles get used interchangeably, but they describe different relationships — and that relationship shapes how many options you actually see before you buy.

    Captive agent

Represents a single insurance carrier. You get deep knowledge of that one company's products, but every quote comes from the same place — so there is nothing to compare it against.

    Independent agent

Appointed with several carriers and licensed to place your policy with any of them. An independent agent shops your risk across markets, then stays with you for service, renewals, and claims.

    Broker

Works on behalf of the buyer rather than a carrier and is not required to have an appointment with the companies quoted. Brokers are common for complex or hard-to-place commercial risks, and their compensation can include a broker fee on top of carrier commission.

Which one should you work with?

If you already know the exact carrier you want, a captive agent for that company is straightforward. If your risk is unusual, very large, or has been declined elsewhere, a broker with access to surplus-lines markets may be the right call. For most Texas households and small businesses, an independent agent is the practical middle ground: multiple carriers quoted side by side, one person handling the paperwork, and the same person answering the phone at renewal or at claim time.

Two questions worth asking anyone you talk to: which carriers can you actually place my policy with, and how are you paid on this policy? Clear answers to both tell you most of what you need to know.
